Amateur Radio License examination sessions are held by the Maury Amateur Radio Club for anyone wishing to obtain or upgrade their FCC Amateur Radio License. Our Volunteer Examiner team is accredited by the W5YI VEC. We ask that if you are interested in taking a License exam with us that you please preregister to guarantee a seat. This helps us make sure we have enough volunteers on hand to administer the exams. Anyone who does not preregister will be considered a “walk-in” and must wait until all preregistered applicants have been seated.
Exam Session Information
- Exam Session Dates: we usually hold exam sessions on the 3rd Saturday of every odd-numbered month (e.g. January, March, May, etc). Click here for the 2025 schedule.
- Exam Session Time: The next exam session will be held May 17, 2025 starting at 9:00 AM.
- Exam Location: the May session will be held at South Gate Church of Christ, 2700 Pulaski Highway, Columbia, TN 38401 (register here)
What to Bring: - $14 exam fee (if not already prepaid); candidates younger than 18 pay a reduced exam session fee of $7. We accept cash or checks made payable to “Maury Amateur Radio Club”.
- Your FCC Regisration Number (FRN).
- A photo ID.
- If you are an existing license holder upgrading to General or Extra, please bring a copy of your current license (not the CSCE).
- You may bring a calculator, but you must clear the memory prior to taking your exam. Cell phones may not be used as calculators, and as a courtesy to others taking an exam we ask that they be turned off or put in silent mode before entering the exam room. In addition, iPhones, iPads, Androids, smartphones, and all similar electronic devices with a calculator capability, may NOT be used during the exam.
- We will provide pens, pencils, and scratch paper.
Note: we are currently switching from paper exams to computer based testing using ExamTools. We have five pre-configured laptops available for testing, so we can test a maximum of five candidates at a time. Candidates will be seated on a “first come, first served” basis (with preregistered applicants having priority). Please be aware that there may be a wait for a laptop to become available before you can test. You have the option to test using paper exams if you do not want to wait.
The initial exam fee pays for one attempt at each of the three exam elements. If a candidate fails an element at an exam session and wants to re-test for the same element, an additional fee will be required.
Effective April 19, 2022 the FCC will charge a $35 fee for NEW license applications (not for upgrades to General or Extra class). This fee will be paid directly to the FCC once you pass your exam; we do not collect this fee at the test session.
